What EMDR does

EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) helps the brain reprocess memories that got stored as if the danger is still happening. You focus briefly on a memory while following bilateral stimulation, usually eye movements or alternating taps. Over sessions, the memory stays but the charge comes down.

It is one of the most studied trauma therapies, and the research supports it for PTSD. It also works well online.

Who it fits

  • Childhood trauma, including growing up with an abusive or narcissistic parent
  • Complex PTSD, where the problem is a pattern rather than one event
  • Specific memories that still hijack your body: a fight, an accident, a medical event
  • People who have talked about it for years and understand it, but still react the same way

How I pace it

With complex trauma, we start with stability. You learn ways to settle your nervous system before we touch anything hard, and you decide what we work on. Nobody gets rushed into the worst memory in week two.

If you have ADHD, I adjust the structure: shorter sets, more check-ins, and a clear plan for what we are doing each session. EMDR often sits alongside other work, such as parts work, attachment work or DBT skills.

Sessions and cost

EMDR happens inside regular 60-minute therapy sessions, at the same rate as therapy ($180). It is not a separate program. Most people with complex trauma do EMDR over months rather than weeks.

Questions

Does EMDR work online?

Yes. Research on telehealth EMDR shows results comparable to in-person sessions. We use on-screen eye movements or self-administered tapping.

Is EMDR safe if I have complex trauma?

It can be, with proper preparation. That is why we start with stabilization and go at a pace you can tolerate.

Do I have to talk about everything that happened?

No. EMDR needs much less detail than talk therapy. You can work on a memory without describing all of it out loud.

Will insurance cover EMDR?

EMDR is billed as psychotherapy. I am in network with Anthem, Aetna and United through Alma, and provide superbills for other plans.
